Astella Progression

Jun 7, 2023 | Blog, Work in Progress Wednesday

WORK IN PROGRESS: Well, this has been a labor of love. As most of you know, I’ve been working on creating kid’s characters in the 3D software that I use. I’ve used the CDC growth charts and gotten tons of input from artists who draw anatomy to try to get fairly accurate proportions.

Astella was one of the very first kid character that I attempted to create. There was a lot of trial and error. And TONS of frustration! With me often wondering why I was taking on this challenge. But it boiled down to the fact that if I want to use kid characters in my artwork then I’m going to have to create them myself.

This is the first rough draft of Astella ranging in age from 3 years old to 18 years old. The age ranges are variable because each child has a unique growth journey. I have simple used the average proportions for kids in the age ranges. This render is straight out of my 3D program. I didn’t worry about posing them or adding expressions because that increases the time on my end exponentially and it also increased the render time. I also didn’t do any dforce or smoothing on their clothes to match the pose for the same reasons listed above.

I am still working on the skin and eyebrow textures that will take quite awhile longer. But I’m excited to have a character with the ability to progressively grow in age. Astella is still a work in progress, but she is coming along nicely

Until next time blessings and healing
